COLOMBIA: Indigenous stage fresh protests

Thousands of indigenous people began a series of marches on 11 October in south-western Colombia to demand the right to their lands, and to protest against the government of President Alvaro Uribe for reneging on promises of social programmes and budgetary assistance. The marches, which culminated in Cali, the capital of the department of Valle del Cauca, were organised by the umbrella Organización Nacional Indí­gena de Colombia (Onic), which represents 1.3m native Colombians.
